1. The Adapter (power supply)
eBay - $25-$35
Genuine Nintendo Switch power supplies are available cheap if you think yours failed.
- The official ones fail for no reason.
- It's still recommended to get the official, genuine one since it's design is good overall.
- The replacement may fail for no reason again.
After that annoying bit, here's some better news:
- Most "Genuine", or "OEM" USB-C laptop chargers work well on Switch.
- MacBook adapters work well
- The Chinese market love high quality power supplies. Ordering from Aliexpress is good here.
2. Bad USB-C Cable or Port
Port repair - $75
Again with the power supply, this time the port or the cable may be the issue.
- In the shop, bad cables come up just as often as clogged up or broken USB-C ports.
- Use light to examine your port, look for fuzz, paper, and green corrosion. Check the cable end too.
Keep metal away from electrical parts.
- Extracting the detritus can be done unplugged from the wall with a plastic pick or wood toothpick.
Green means stop.
- Green corrosion is evidence of water damage. Do not try charging it.
3. Internal Fault
Soldering - $75/hour
If you're reading #3 here, it needs to be opened up.
Not to replace the battery, replacing the battery works on a lot of other devices, but on the Switch it's usually not going to help.
- A tech will want to disconnect the battery to take readings.
- They may also want to solder wires to test lines that commonly fail
- The best techs will force power into specific places to test even deeper.
Experienced techs may have tools, soldering skills, and experience enough to make a living off of this.
4. Liquid or Water Damage
Did you see green in your port? Did you see green on the motherboard?
It comes in white too!

5. Dropped too hard
The chips are glass that thinks.
Sometimes the thinking glass can shatter, sometimes it has a small crack that gets worse over time.
Drops are expected with most Nintendo devices, however the nVidia APU on the Switch is barely protected from gravity's wrath.
6. Other
Lots of other reasons, most of them annoyingly hard to fix, or really easy.
